Trainer Profile - Neil King
I was brought up in a farming family near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. I started riding at the age of ten following the Pony Club/Hunting route then progressing to Point-to-Pointing. On leaving school I spent a year at agricultural college before working in Point-to-Point yards during the winter, spending the summers riding out in Newmarket for Harry Thomson Jones and Mark Tompkins.
I then spent two years as Pupil Assitant to Nicky Henderson at Windsor House in Lambourn and in the summer and worked for a National Hunt Trainer in America. On leaving Mr Henderson's I started my own Hunting livery and point to point yard, which I ran successfully for twelve years, riding and training many winners.
In 2002 I purchased the Middle and Lower yards of St Gatien Stables in Newmarket and started training under rules. I had a successful 12 years in Newmarket, sending out over 180 winners and building up the business. In July 2014 I took the big step of purchasing Upper Herdswick Farm, allowing me to train from my own private facilities on the Wiltshire Downs, and returning to the countryside where I am far more at home!
